The American government’s Fulbright fellowship program for student, researchers and lecturers is considered one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world. In 2021, Fulbright Israel celebrated 65 years of activity, and turned to us to create a website that would serve as a digital exhibition that would celebrate and boast six and a half decades of significant activity.
Learning about the program, we saw how academic and personal ties were formed between its participants over the years, and how the work of one can be a direct continuation of his predecessors. This meant Fulbright’s history could not be experienced as a collection of isolated items – rather as layers of academic history, similar to an archaeological excavation, which was indeed our inspiration for both the website’s UX/UI and its design.
Dozens of scholars have been chosen to participate in the exhibition (and others are constantly added to this day). The scholars are spread-out over chronological layers, and are marked according to their category of research – just like in archaeological findings. As in archeology, also in Fulbright, one find can relate to more than one point in the historical research, and sometimes entering one scholar’s tab can lead to others through a simple action of browsing.
For the benefit of those who do not want to roam freely between the layers of history, but to discover data about a certain field, about a certain educational institution, or about the winners of a certain award, the website contains a responsive system of filters and cross-references. And those who wish to learn about the history of the Fulbright program and not through the stories of its participants but through data, can go to the website’s B-side, and scroll through illustrated and responsive infographics.
